New feature provides outdoor privacy for customers

Canale’s Restaurant, 156 W. Utica St., Oswego, recently expanded to include an additional outdoor patio which opened to customers during Harborfest weekend.
The 1,000-square-foot patio opened recently after about three months of construction and renovations.
“It’s a different atmosphere. We went with more of a Tuscan theme with stucco walls. We did a lot of research on Italian courtyards and tried to come up with something we thought fit for us,” said owner Nick Canale Jr.
Canale’s invested $30,000 into the patio, which sits on the restaurant’s west side along West Utica Street.
“We put a patio out front about five or six years ago, and it’s turned into something that’s been pretty popular with our customers. The only negative feedback we got was that it was out near the road, right by the front door and it wasn’t really that private. We thought we could provide that out here [at the new site],” said Canale.
Previously, the space the patio now occupies was the front yard of the next-door house, which Canale’s also owns. It also occupies the area where the front porch of the house was, and the house’s driveway.
“We put radiant heat in the floor to try to extend the season. We ran some gas piping so we can put in a gas fireplace in the future,” Canale said. “We’re going to try to do some different things we haven’t done in the past. We’re going to have some small bands out here, try to have some entertainment.”
Canale’s added a door to the patio from the dining room of the restaurant, bringing in more light indoors. Additionally, Canale plans to add two more windows to the dining room for additional light.
Canale’s was founded in 1954 by brothers Mike and Dom Canale. Nick Canale Sr. took over as owner of the restaurant during the 1980s, and his son Nick Jr. has been working at the restaurant his whole adult life.
