Owner’s Investment: $100,000

Glass Doctor, a nationwide franchise company, has recently added a location in Oswego. Franchise owner Chris Wright brings 25 years of experience in glass to the table.

Wright got his start at the Fulton Glass Company 25 years ago when a friend offered him a job. He said the owner and his friend took him under their wings and taught Wright everything he knows.

After ceasing work at the company, Wright decided to take all the knowledge he had acquired over the years and started his own location of the Glass Doctor franchise. Glass Doctor of Oswego opened for business in February.

“At the time there wasn’t any competition in the Oswego area. There were all kinds of out-of-town glass people coming in. I was out of work and I figured I’ve been doing glass for 25 years, why not start my own shop?” Wright said.

Since the idea struck him, Wright has been spending countless hours reading up on the franchise information including disclosure documents, royalty fees and the expectations of him as a franchise owner. He said the initial start-up cost was about $100,000.

A company associated with Glass Doctor called Premiere Access based in Nevada set Wright up with a credit card financing plan to start his business. The company offered him $80,000 between 15 credit cards, he said.

Currently, Wright is running and operating the business on his own. He hopes to break even within the first year, and to have employees working under him by year three.

“My three-year plan is to have people under me so I don’t have to work anymore. I’m still going to be here. I won’t be one of those absent bosses, but I’ve been at this pace for 25 years. It’s time to slow down,” said Wright.

When Wright does acquire employees they will offer customers clean and friendly service as he does now, he said. Personality, cleanliness and professionalism are extremely important to Wright and to the success of his business. He always greets customers with a smile, and is always dressed in uniform, which sets him apart from other glass companies. The key to success, Wright said, is to have happy customers.

“Word of mouth is the best advertising I can get. If I have happy customers they are going to tell other people,” Wright said.

Glass Doctor of Oswego is located at 849 Middle Road in Oswego and is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The company services the Oswego area including Fulton, Auburn and Skaneateles.
